Interesting... saw this on Facebook
Badly corroded Slammer.
Just shows... "waterproof" reels do not exist. Maintenance is CRITICAL!

Van Staal and Okuma might disagree.. :)

But that reel in the pic is just negligence. If the reel gets dunked, it need to get serviced after the session. If its doesnt get dunked then a periodic service.

Have a look at Jonathan's page. There are some messed up fishermen out there. Complete disregard for equipment..

Thanks Reefman, Do you have a Service "checklist" that you follow?

Not really, every reel is different.

If you want to do the minimum service, then you need to get to the bearings of your reel and service those. They are the first things to corrode, so if you can lube your bearings often, then you should be good.

That is a beaut tutorial.

I recently found, washed up on a remote beach in Western Australia, a Slammer 3 6500 attached to a broken rod.
A lot of the outside paint/powder coating had been worn off, the handle was missing and the bail support arm was worn.
I stripped the reel and found it to be full of sand and water (not unexpected) but surprised to find the sealed bearings also full of water. I cleaned all the parts, replace the missing and worn parts, reassembled it (about 30 times) Finally got it running smoothly and thought bob's your uncle.

Took to the water for casting checks before a fish session and discovered something really weird; 3 casts, excess of 100 metres each time, retrieved perfectly, 4th cast rewound about 50 metres and the handle seized, couldn't turn it. I removed the handle and the turned the spool by hand very smooth. Installed the handle and still seized. Now the strangest part. When I went back to the reel the next day tried and it worked perfectly. Back to the water and tried again for the exact same result seized up after 3 1/2 retrieves.

Seems to be something heating up, expanding and seizing up, but how can it turn so freely without the handle. The bearings are packed with grease, all surfaces are brushed with grease.

Still looking for a solution. Anyone with any thoughts would be welcome to comment.

Could be many things... make sure the Anti-reverse bearing is not upside down?  :dunno:

Thanks, not the anti reverse. Retrieves perfectly for 3 casts and then seizes up.

Guess I'll send it back to PENN.

Hi,

Anyone got their hand on Slammer IV yet?  How it compare to III?

Many thanks.

I have both Slammers and Gosas, and love both.

Those tiny little phillips head screws on the Slammer is a pain. Especially those ones holding the bottom drag washers.
It is very easy to strip the phillips slot.
Somebody does not perhaps know if you can somehow replace those screws with a screw with a flat slot?

If my 10 000 Gosa eventually goes, I will probably replace it with a slammer as well, just cause its way easier to service.

Regards

Hi Reefman

Do these flaws exist on the bigger models also, like 8500 up (black and gold model)?

I know people that have Gosas and Slammers and they claim that the Slammer is better sealed than the Gosa and is better for Sharks.  :dunno:

Thanks

Pretty sure most of the Slammers have a similar build. Slammer is definitely better sealed than the Gosa, but still doesn't prevent strict maintenance though.
