Need advice on ultra light lure rod and reel- Salwater
« on: October 19, 2023, 04:14:49 PM »
Hi Guys
Please share some advice on a medium budget rod and reel for ultra light lure fishing at the Durban harbor and river mouths.
New to this type of fishing, I have about 200 paddle tails, jerk minnows and jigs that are collecting dust.

Thank you

Good day Preno,

Ultralight would be casting weight from 1-12 grams, i can highly recommend okuma LRF 7ft 1st or 2nd Gen, that with 6 lb braid and 6LB flouro as leader cant go wrong, if you not an Okuma fan have a look at assassin/ shimano equivalents but they almost double the price....

OKUMA LRF GEN2 (ganis.co.za)

Tight lines !

reel wise any 1000-2500 sized reel would be perfect, i have a newer Diawa laguna LT 2500 imported from the states, got 8 kg of drag which is overkill, reel is smooth like butter, just dont dunk it in water the anti reverse will start slipping

Hi JTW

I will look at the Okuma LRF, I am not fussy on brands.

Thank you for the info, will post soon

Depending on what the budget is, the Assassin Tempest II 5ft6 paired with the Shimano Nasci 1000 is a winner combo!

Assassin edge II RODS are very affordable and capable of landing big fish, one of my mates uses the 5,6ft UL and has caught many kob up to 20kg. The 6,6ft ML is probably more versatile. Don't go too tiny on the reel, 2500 or 3000 size is fine and if on a budget boss finesse 10lb braid I can recommend

Hey guy, I’m also looking for an ultra light rod. I’ve been using the Okuma Serrano 7ft and it’s been working great in the surf I need a 5’6ft for the estuaries I battle with the 7fts in the surf. The species count is in the double digits now with fish. I’m really enjoying light tackle fishing!

7fts in the estuaries as I can’t get the action on the lures the rod tip is a bit stiff on the sensation power plus finesse
