I was not sure what this rod was (obviously have not spent enough time in the fishing shops / online). I see the rod is rated for recommended 4oz to 6oz casting weight. Would that be enough to hold fast with the size bait you are planning on sliding out? I see there are some video reviews out, maybe worth watching..........

I have not slid a bait in years, but I think your biggest obstacle is the braid.
Some people claim you can slide with braid, some dont......
I have tried it once and it was a monumental stuff up.

I think if you are elevated quite high and have a very steep downwards angle, then braid could possibly work.
Alternatively you have to put mono on your grinder.

i would use mono but was more concerend with the stiffness of the rod, if a 4 to 6oz rod is stiff enough for sliding. i have not tried sliding before.

It is an Assasin rod so thought maybe the SA guys would know about it.,as Assasin is an SA brand and sliding was invented in SA.

looking at the sliding technque on videos i would think need quite a stiff / fast action rod to jerk the line...but like i say, i dont know much about this technique

I have an old Assassin 13'6". I have used it for sliding and it works just fine.

I don't slide out bait often, but when I do, the Assassin works fine. In these cases I normally get the gillie to cast out for me, as he casts further than I do

Unless you're proficient in sliding, a 4-6 oz rod is way too light to slide with. With a 6 oz sinker, you will battle to get it to anchor your line. We normally slide with 8 to 10oz sinkers, and almost always with a multiplier reel, because the grinders don't have enough line to stop a big fish.

Is it possible to slide with this rod ?

Interested in knowing what species you are targeting on a slide in Ghana? Please let me know.

is more about trying to get a live bait out past the big breakers that break right onto the beach, rather than targeting bg fish,  it is not possible to wade out into this sea.. fishing for Jacks , snappers , barracuda.

Reefman is correct. Even with a 6 oz grapnel sinker, you will sometimes battle to get a secure anchor point from which to slide. I use a 7oz grapnel (on my 4 - 6 oz rod) with very stiff wire grapnels, and sometimes i battle with that too........
The mold I use to make them says 8oz, but I weighed them on the kitchen scale and they are only 7oz.

Thanks guys. will try with my 12foot Tiralejo rated to 10oz  and Saltiga 50HK as a practice outfit, as that is what i have in conventional heavy set up. and see how i get on . If is something i want to pursue then will get a longer 10oz rod to pair the Saltiga to.

What size line do you typically use for sliding ?

Hi. A technique to slide with braid is to attach an elastic strech line/rope to the grapnel sinker. The strech absorbs the abrupt pulls and not the sinker. You clip the sinker to the leader line to eliminate the elastic line in the cast.

You can use this setup with 6oz grapnel sinkers on number 5 rods as well. The sinker won't pull.

You clip the sinker to the ring at the end of the leader line, similar to how you would clip a sinker to a hook. I'm referring to the bigger ring used at the end of the leader line in a sliding setup. This takes the elastic line, which runs from the ring at the end of the leader line to the sinker, out of the casting action. The sinker hits the water, clips from that ring, which results in the elastic line unclipping as well. The sinker grips into the sand and the elastic line straightens between the sinker and the leader line. It is now ready to absorb the heavy jerking momentum to slide the bait on braid, keeping the sinker pinned down in one place. The 8 or 9 strand braids sealed on the outer part to reduce friction when casting work best.
