Southern African Saltwater 100 Species Challenge
« on: June 07, 2023, 04:26:35 AM »
Heya guys & gals.
Having grown up in Northern Zululand, I have been visiting game parks my whole life and so have developed lists of mammals & birds I have seen over the years. This is very much part of birding specifically, the whole listing thing and so I began to wonder if I could do the same with saltwater fishing, specifically rock and surf fishing, no boats allowed. The area for the list extends from Mozambique south of the Zambezi around to the Cunene Mouth in Namibia.

Living in Gauteng has made it somewhat tricky to chase the list but since the beginning of 2022 I have managed 36 species fishing a few trips to KZN and a trip to Namibia. I have caught everything from Bronze Whalers to Long-spine Glassy's but I still have a very long way to go.

I am logging my journey at https://jon4376.wixsite.com/the-saltwater-fishin for those who may be interested in following the journey. I have photographed every species I have caught except one. As I am fishing for a single specimen of each species my fishing is very different to most anglers. For example, not having yet fished the Cape yet, all the shy sharks are much higher value targets for me than Kob/Kabeljou (unless it is Square-tail or Nondi which I still need).

If you are able to, I would really appreciate any help targeting some of the species I am less familiar with. For this who are interested the list of what I still need can be found here https://jon4376.wixsite.com/the-saltwater-fishin/blank-1 If any of the more experienced guys who have fished the whole of Southern SA has advise on how they would map a year to maximise different spots that would also be helpful.

My wife allows me to keep all the fishing tackle I can hide.
