Looking for some general advice
« on: April 03, 2023, 01:55:06 PM »
Hello there,
I am hoping to get some advice from all you top anglers on this platform. I am a very inexperienced saltwater fisherman, and living on a farm in Northern Limpopo means that I very rarely get a chance to improve my skills. That being said I do love getting down to the coast and getting my bait into the water.

I am very happy to be planning a little visit to the Pennington area of KZN towards the end of April this year, in fact this month. And I cant wait to do a little fishing there. That being said my time there is limitted and the trial and error method of learning (although very important I know) is not going to serve me well. I was hoping that some of you on this forum might be able to give me a little advice on what fish species to target at this time of year and what bait you recommend. I do like to target edibles so any info surrounding these species would be highly appreciated.

Thanking you all in advance, and looking forward to your feedback,
Cheers,
Pete

Welcome Pete! You are in the same boat as a lot of us......living far from the sea. We also look forward to the occasional outing to the beach (this Saturday it's finally time for me!!!!!!!!), where it feels like we are starting from scratch every time we go down there.
Best is to try and hook up with some local anglers, who can show you the ropes. Local knowledge is invaluable. Not only will they know what is and is not biting, but will also know which spots produce fish, and when. If you can't get hold of anyone before you do, try the local fishing / bait shop. The people in there are generally helpful. Enjoy!

Thank you for the warm welcome guys.

Yes I will definitely chat with and watch the local experts. I guess my question comes from a place of always liking to be prepared and doing research before hand.

So really, I suppose, what I'm looking for is some advice on which edible species are worthwhile targeting at the end of April / start May. Will the Shad be biting? I have always had luck with them in June.

All the best, Pete

Welcome Pete... I see you are a neighbor to both Crankman and myself... We should have a beer sometime.
Forgive me Father for I have spinned... It's been three weeks since my last cob session.

Hi there, wow look at that. I did not think that I would find so many Limpopians here. We must definitely chat, I hardly ever fish fresh water but maybe now it's the time give it a try. Perhaps you can recommend some lekker spots around LTT.

I didn't fish fresh water at all until a few years ago, then Sean (Crankman) got me into it. I just wasn't getting to the salt often enough, so I took up a bit of bass fishing. I really suck at it, and bass don't exactly put up a fuss, but it's better than no fishing.

I fish Albasini quite often and occasionally get down to Nandoni just the other side of Thohoyandou. Both produce fish and it's always good to be on the water.

I'll PM my phone/whatsapp number to you.
