The ELS system as far as I know is a sliding butt. You can extend it and cast then return it to the short position for fishing. My experience with sliding things is invariably they slide when you want them to stay still and won't slide when you want them to

Clint at the end of the day its personal choice. If you want to go for the long butt go for it. Its the same issue with the leader some anglers will choose the long braid leader while other just the short mono leader and others will go for a full mono leader

The reason I asked the original question was , as you might know, I am looking to get into the R&S thing next year. If I can get away with a  :cg: setup instead of  :mp: it would be great. My only problem is doing a sideways(pedulum?) cast. I totally suck at it  :hehe: :hehe: :hehe:, but with the overhead cast I am pretty good. But tone needs a longer butt for the overhead as the left arm gets the rods to bend as it pulls down.

When is the next social after Vidal. I will really have to have a look at your setup Brad.

Clint I don't know if my setup is the right way to go for someone just getting into things the rod was R3500 so not cheap. I would rather look at the posedion or beacmaster. If you just want to have a go casting with the short butt then by all means try it if I can make the next social (exams start in November so I will have to see)

Our club did so bad at the last league I am going to have to be at our clubcomp this weekend! We will have to regroup before the next one. Luckily I am no hurry so I will catch up with you when ever. Thanks for the offer. I will definately try it out next time we meet.

What is the chances of posting a pic of the bionic finger. Google is a terrible place to start looking for it as I found a lot of references to presthetics haha!

half pint have you had a look at the ELS system from blue marlin, that will give u the set up you are looking for and you will be able to cast your rod the same way that you would for carp fishing with the but extended and fishing with the but in for better control for fighting.i have 3 blue marlin 1piece carbon blanks that i am going rebuild with the ELS system.

I had a look at the blue marlin rods you mention at Sollys yesterday. I like the idea of the telescopic but. I'm sure it will last if you look after your gear. That said, I only R&S once a year if at all, so for me it's a different story.

Would love to get a surf setup like Brad's but I'm investing in more light spinning rods and reels right now so the cash she is too little....

Sticking to my trusty old grandwave for now...

I have been  :fshn:  using grinders always only since August that I changed to  :mp: . I use 2 set up's, the first one
is a Quantum surge su80f cost R300-00 with a Okuma rod with a short butt cost R190-00. Caught some nice fish on this set up. Second set up is a TiCA spinfocus GT7000R reel with a Black Eagle rod. Cost for reel R500-00 and rod R220-00. I am sure that this set up will handle big fish with ease. My way at looking at this is for a person that fish R&S only about 15 days a year and than only max 6 hours per day it does not warrant to buy equipment costing thousands. I used to play a lot of golf and decided to buy a new set. I got myself Mizuna clubs and my set costed me R14000-00. I am using it 4 times a year. Doesn't make sense. If a person fish regulary like comps and every second weekend that you need to buy proffesional stuff but if only going to be used once a year no need.
