Casting the Saltiga 50 HK
« on: December 08, 2022, 12:16:02 PM »
Is this a good reel for surf casting bait (not lure casting) Am talking about the original Saltiga 50 with the blue spool using centrifugal brakes .

It's an excellent reel for Surf Casting. We generally use the 50 for targeting Inedibles (Sharks, Rays).
For targeting smaller edible fish, one can scale down to the size 40 and even the 30. (Saltist 30), which will cast much further.

thanks for the info, i need to practice, i have it monted on a 12' Shimano Tiralejo (Power: Heavy,  Action: Fast) am using the red brakes with the flat side out.

for practice purposes, should i use 50lb braid or 30lb mono as a beginner casting these type of reels (i am used to casting grinders)

Also the reel is more or less still new, was used once may years ago and lovingly packed away (clean) however though it appears to free spool well ther is a clacking sort of sound coming from the right (handle side) plate.

inside reel looks brand new and bearings are spotless and spin well... is this clacking normal, is it the pinion gear rattling when free..?

Thanks for any advice

Mounted on a 12 ft rod... don't think that will be a very well balanced setup. We use our size 50 reels on 14ft rods. A 12 ft rod would be more suited to a size 30 reel.
Not sure what the clacking sound could be without opening the reel and having a look?

I replied on the other thread to the question on the noise on the spool. Check your spool. Those blue spools were notorious for warping and breaking.

I have an old Assassin 13'6" medium action rod. When I am planning to slide out a big bait, I will use the Saltiga. It is a fine piece of machinery. For general use I prefer the Sealine 50 (would probably use a Sealine 40 if I had one), because, for me it is a better balance with my Assassin rod. I also cast further with the Sealine 50, because the balance is better. I am average height and build, and slightly unsteady on my feet, so can't give it a full power throw. I see bigger people use the Saltiga with ease, but I just find it un-balances my rig. I have mag-braked the Saltiga (and all my other multipliers)
The Saltiga is definitely a big rod, big fish, reel. At the various Ultimate social gatherings, I have cast with smaller reels, and they do give me better distance.

Thanks for all the info guys! will check spool and open up side plates after xmas see what noise is.
ianf: How did you mag the Saltiga i was told can only do the Saltist due to space issues...
Will get a longer rod for the Saltiga and maybe put a Penn FathomII 15 Casting special on my 12' Tiralejo (is this a good combo)

Brandon (Fishatic on this forum) did it for me. He does a really great job. And it is not expensive (around R300 or so when I did mine). It does require a bit of fine tuning to get it right for your body, rod, and throwing style. But once that is done, you will have more confidence, and will cast further.
Brandon is based in JHB.
