Recommended kit for rock & surf - newbie
« on: July 16, 2022, 04:51:58 PM »
I'd like to get a new setup. I have some experience fishing rock & surf with 12-14ft rods and multiplier but am no good at casting with a multiplier (my dad always did the casting). I'd like a decentish (read: not too expensive but not rubbish) coffee grinder and 12-14ft kit that won't be too expensive in case I don't take the hobby up full time.

What would you consider to be a solid beginner kit? What size reel and rod do you recommend for fishing from a sandy shore and from the rocks for edibles - bluefish, cob, galjoen, piggies, etc. 2-10kg preferably.

Also what rig should I use? I'm familiar with 1x swivel with hook + trace off the top eye and bottle sinker + trace off the bottom eye - hook trace 2/3 of sinker trace length wise (not sure what it's called?)... Also familiar with running sinker with extra swivel plus trace before hook trace for rocky areas.

What weight sinkers go with what size rod? And what size reel? Any recommendations for a decent setup? Should I be going 14.6+ rod for a decent cast? What about leaders - I see a lot of braid in use....

Thanks in advance. Sorry for all the questions!
I plan to fish with sandprawn, squid, pilchard, red bait, pink prawn, maybe mudprawn from time to time.

P.s. I'm based in the eastern half of the EC near Kei Mouth.

Ta!

Ok I think I'm going to go with:
Okuma Safina 8000: https://basilmanning.co.za/product/okuma-spin-safina-sn-8000
Okuma wave power 14" / 15" 3pc https://basilmanning.co.za/product/okuma-wave-power-14-xh-spin-3pc

Any reservations with that kit?
As for line... At this stage regular nylon or should I be using braid? What's the general consensus there?
Thanks!

Hi Wedwo :welc:
The kit you have selected will do the job. It's a real 'budget' setup, but if you look after the stuff it should give you a season or 2's pleasure. Always remember that you pay for what you get, so not sure if a R700 reel for Rock and Surf is going to last you too long.
You should definitely put braid on the reel. Braid's sensitivity to bite detection is crucial to your success.

The guys who you buy the kit from can advise you on a budget braid.
From there, go practice your casting and have some fun with different baits etc. Best to hook up with a local... they can show you the ropes for the fish you'll be targetting in your area.
