Almost looks like one of your oceanic puffer species.

Difficult pic to work with... Could be the cigar wrasse, but the mouth looks wrong... would love to see a better pic!

Walkerskiller, the tail in the pic. is not flared out as it would be when the fish is swimming and the distance from the eye to the front of the snout is to long for it to be a puffer. Look at the pics in the Smiths book of fishes. Cigar Wrasse.

The mouth is quite different to 220.17 and also lacks the prominent anal and dorsal fins?

Have a look at 264.1(c) in Smiths? Even has that funny long fin coming out of the head area. I thinks its a Unicorn Filefish...

Walkerskiller, you're right about the mouth and spike on the head. I looked at the pics again and it does seem to be the puffer you mentioned.

Prof. Nadine Strydom (NMMU) has indicated that it is a juvenile of one of the File Fishes, specifically one of the Leatherjacket Fishes in this group.
This specimen was in poor condition and had lost its fins, so difficult to narrow down to exact species name.
Often these small juveniles are blown ashore after strong south easterly winds. They are pelagic juveniles, so they hang around near the ocean surface until they are a little older then they join the adult population.
The purpose of the spine is to wedge themselves into reefs overnight.
