Hi guys, this past weekend we fished the Vaal Dam close to Tago. It was myself, Mrs Simpson, Stephan his girlfriend, gavin erwin and his Girlfriend.
We arrived on Friday afternoon around 5 45pm. We set up camp, fed the area, and then started fishing. I didnt get anything during the night but Gavin managed 3 beautiful Mirror Carp... Including a nice fish of 3kgs.

Then it was an early start on Saturday morning and I rebaited up and waited from 5am, was suppossed to meet up with Naruto but my phone had no signal and I walked all over to try get just 1 bar, but failed :-(
I ended up loosing 4 very good fish on this day due to them getting snagged up, was very dissapointing, the last one that got snagged IU swam out to try fetch it, but as I pulled the rig loose, the fish came off :-( ended up with 5 fish on the day, 4 Common Carp and 1 Mirror Carp, Mrs Simpson got a nice big Mudfish and Stephan did as well, Gavin absolutely cained the fish catching Barbel, Carp and Mudfish of all sizes!

Sunday came and we were on the fish once more... Gavin got a 5kg Mirror Carp, what an awesome fish and I got my PB Mudfish, 500 grams, my PB Mirror Carp, 1.7 kgs and a 3.1kg Common Carp. In total I got 13 fish, Gavin must of got about 25. It was a great fishing weekend with some nice fish being caught, we used plain sweet dough and banana and vanilla essence on a Vaal Dam rig with 1 hook. Plain Mielie bomb mixed with molasses was used.

-
Thanks Reefz :-)

Sweeet post! (clap) Glad you guys did well. I haven't fished Tago or the surrounds for a while now (someone mentioned to me that Tago is now closed to anglers?) but it always produced esp. in late spring.
-
Thanks Weedeater... Some parts of Tago are only used for competitions now, but the whole area is full up with fish all year round!

Great report Gareth! Some very nice fish there.
The fish in the Vaal Dam are often so pale. I think its because the water isn't very clear so the rays of the sun don't penetrate deep. Some dams with very clear water have carp that are almost golden yellow sometimes.
Tago isn't closed. Some part are just allocated as Members Only. You can pay a monthly fee to have access to these areas. Its on their website if you want to go have a look. But there is still about 6km of water to fish.

Awesome stuff..thanks for sharing....cheers
-
Nice catches WK and co , some :clfoto: as well... (clap) .
-
Nice report bru! Any ideas why Gavin nailed the fish and you guys didn't get as many? Different baits or casting distance or just good ol fashioned luck?
-
Thanks guys, much appreciated!
@ Brad, Stephan didnt fish a lot, and neither did the others, in all honesty I think its because he is a much better fisherman, we were using the same baits and casting in the same spot, same distance, our rods were right next to each other. He landed the bigger fish whereas I lost them, lost 9 large fish the weekend, and he lost one big fish...

Sweet! Thanks WK.

Cool! I'm always interested to find out what the guy who nailed the fish did differently to everyone else. So often its such a small thing like keeping your tip up during the fight to keep the fish out the snags or a thinner leader and it makes all the difference.
-
It might be something as small as the size of the hooks....
-
We used same hooks, same rigs, same baits. The only difference is I smoke and he doesnt and I lost more fish than he did. We fished the same times in the same areas...

So now there is only one explanation - :vio
