I just put a new leader on using the Bimini Twist & Fig 8 knot. Tell me does it matter long the line is between the two knots?  Mine is about 30cm!

The longer the doubled line is between the 2 knots, the more chance of the double opening and snagging an eye. Best to keep it about 10-12cm.

  Reefs. I'll redo it tomorrow as my leader ended up 15cm short off making atleast one rotation around my reel. Gotta refill my other reel also as i had so many break-offs today that my line went from 300m to approx.35m. Will have to connect it to the braid again. Will have to look into the proper knot for that...

Proper knot connect braid backing to mainline is to Bimini braid, bimini mainline and join with a CATS PAW knot... all in the Knots section. If you can't do a good Bimini, then rather replace the Bimini with a Spider Hitch, which is a much more forgiving knot. (The Bimini must be done properly, otherwise it will fail.)

whats your views on leaving the 3rd leg of the bimini on ?. i noticed you cut it off. i have always left it on. wonder if it really makes a diffrence in strenght?

Habib... I know there are quite a few guys who leave the tag end as a 3rd leg.... don't know whether it is stronger or not, but it's definitely a more bulky knot.... I prefer the 2 leg one. But each to his own.

Tie the leader onto the doubled line first. Once the fig. 8 is pulled up lightly you can slide it down the doubled line for a cm or 2 and you then even out the 2 legs. This helps to keep the 2 legs evn in length.
