Fishing Tales from MPT Bay aboard "Micaela": 4 Jun 2011
« on: June 05, 2011, 05:50:31 PM »
We got to the club at 06:45 and were greeted with a fantastic sunrise over a mirror sea.

Loaded the boat and we're all set to launch at 07:15.

The sea was flat and it took us about an hour of a relaxed drive to get to our fishing ground. Water temp was 21.9o C and the water was dirty green!

As I deployed our first bait for couta (a big mackie) and was just puting our second (jap mackie) I got a strike on the second... rod still in my hands! Didn't stick and when I retrieved it I saw the fish still chasing the bait.... dropped it again hoping what looked like a prodigal son would pick it up again.... it did nibble a few times... I stroke it and was on! After all it was a remora, which was safely released!!!!!

Well we kept drifting and slow trolling for couta and the S wind picked up really ugly (weatherman LIED)!!!! White horses and all!  :wndy

About half an hour later I got a good strike on one of the baits but it didn't stick. We were playing around with poppers, spoons and peterblace had a good pull on his jig!!! However, some toothy critter cut through his kevlar cord like a razor blade!  swr

At about 12:00 we decided to start trolling with rappies and see what we could get... within 45 min we had 4 couta on board!  :cout: (range 3 - 6.5 kg a total of 17 kg)....

The wind dropped with the tide and as we had our fair share of fish for the pot, we decided to go a bit deeper and try to get a tunny or maybe a saillie on our way back home...

Outriggers were deployed, teasers and konas + birds, etc...

No action whatsoever... no birds around.... lot's of dolphins and water was still dirty and cold 23.4o C. Took the opportunity to test a lot of tackle (teasers, konas, a center rigger) and must say I'm very pleased with the results...

We made a stop at the buoys to throw a popper but no takers...

The sea was flat again and we made our way home swiftly with the sun setting behind Maputo's buildings... we did 70 nm and used 85 L of fuel...

All in all, a great day at sea, with some relaxed fishing in good company (and excellent food - thanks peterblace!)!

Don't have any pics apart from the sunrise.... so peterblace post a few pics for us will you? Thanx!

just to had to JohnF's report that we only got the fish because I feed Neptune (with a bit of natural chumming)...it was a first time for me and I have to say that I felt great after...didn't realize how relief we can stay after we trow up

here are the pics of our catch and the sunset

I also have a couple of videos of JohnF's experimental gear...I'll find out a way to post here

Great guys. Definitely not due to a lack of trying. Micaela will get the billies and monsters anytime now.
