(clap) :resp: Please give more info on your tackle. I want to tackle them toothy guys with my Exage 110H and SL30. Do you think it will be possible or am I poking an angry lion with a short stick?

caught them with a 110 and sl30 plenty times at langebaan but on the reefs its a angry lion with a short stick......

Guys i said it the last time i posted pics like these.....they are for interest, but i beg you please don't try this if you don't know how.

We are getting a 99% landed to hookup rate, but have been planning and practising for this for a very long time...

As i've said before......lost fish trailing leaders are nothing to be proud of!!

I respect your views and agree with you. I would not try it from the bricks and will only concentrate on the lagoon. There are some good sized raggies and skates here and I am thinking of getting into the action. I will also not be using my boat and will certainly plan everything carefully. It might not be the same as catching them from the reefs but I am sure that it will still be a good tussle.

My biggest so far in the lagoon was a Diamond of 18kg on a 7ft Diawa rod and a Abu 6500 C3 loaded with 5.5kg mono. I was looking for Kob and did not expect it. I was alone on my boat and knew I would have a lot of trouble to safely release the fish. I eventually beached on a sand bank and got the fish out. It also had a hand line of about 40m attached to it (stick and all) which I removed as best as I could. I'll try and find the photos and post them.

Do you not use wind-ons for 1.2mm and above?

A Few reasons.....

I never felt i had the right tools to make them correctly.

I hated the way that the ones I made had a hinging effect where the leader line stopped inside the dacron just before the tanakas loop. This lead to the leader wrapping around the guide on the odd occasion.

I felt I took too long to make them.

I have seen too many fail at the join, or the loop breaks, or the whole dacron sleeve is pulled off if the fish goes through the bricks........non of the ones i made but i've seen it happen to others.

I just did not see the advantage over a tapered leader where i can make a join using 2 fig 8's to .90 line and still have a 1.6mm leader.

I admit that most of these point are down to me not taking the time to refine and perfect the art of making windons, but on the flip side the way i look at fishing is to keep it as simple as possible with the least amount of things that can go wrong. And i see tapered leaders or even normal leaders for that matter as more fool proof than windons.

Very interesting,

As a social(internet) angler, I try all the latest tricks and innovations, I read about all the latest tackle on the net and in magazines, where sticking to the basics can save me a lot of trouble, frustration and money and be just as good.

Something to think about!
